　島根県立石見美術館からの依頼による、石見根付の制作です。私の作風は、もともと石見根付のそれに似た傾向という感想を頂くことが多いですが、私自身の中では、似て非なる物でありまったくの別物として制作しています。なので、本格的に石見根付を見据えての制作は、これが初めてということになります。以下は、作品を納めた際の解説として添えた当時の全文です。

　『石見根付制作の依頼がありました当初より終了まで、一貫して考え続けたこと、それは「石見根付とは何か？」ということに他なりません。自然の一コマを表現する根付は数多く存在し、それを得意とする根付師もまたしかり。しかし、石見根付という分野は、それらと似て非なる、まったく別の創作であると言っても過言ではないでしょう。一体、何がそこまでの差異を醸しているのでしょうか。
　一つには素材。猪や海松といった、その当時の事情を反映した特殊な物を使用することが多いという点。象牙を使用しているケースに於いても、どこか不安定な形をした端材を使用している物が多く見受けられる。また他方には、根付独特の「洒落」「ひねり」という概念をあまり盛り込まない素朴な題材が主流であるという点。制作年月日等を細かく彫り込んでいるという点。挙げればきりがありませんが、それらすべての印象をひっくるめたとしても、石見根付に対する答えには到底及ばないでしょう。
　この度は「自分らしい素朴さ」「現代の作品であること」「素材への意識」等の事柄を念頭に置き、制作を終えました。素材から教えられることは多く、なぜ石見根付が石見根付なのかということが、多少なりとも理解出来たような気がします。制作よりも思案する時間の方が多くなってしまいましたが、石見の先人に恥じる所のない、相応の答えを形に出来たのではないかと自負しています。』

This was an order piece of IWAMI ART MUSEUM. The order was to make an IWAMI NETSUKE. People usually says that my NETSUKE has some tendencies of this IWAMI works , but in my mind, I feel there is no relation between my works and IWAMI works. They are quite different things. So, this is the first work that I should have the opinion to make it. The following message is an explanations what I wrote to IWAMI ART MUSEUM.
"At the beginning to the end of this work, I was always thinking of it only, that is "What's the IWAMI NETSUKE is ?" There are many NETSUKE artist that could make the subject from nature, but, I think IWAMI NETSUKE is not at all. IWAMI works are far from them. What are the differences between each other ?
One thing that I can mention is that, they used the special material such like Boar tusk or Coral according to the reason of there situation. However using an Ivory, they were almost like some chips. Otherwise, they were so simple enough that they didn't includes the characteristic of NETSUKE something like "SHARE" or "HINERI" so much. They wrote tiny words something like dates or names. There are numerous things what I should refer more. But maybe, my opinions are far from the ultimate answers to IWAMI NWTSUKE.
In this chance, I've coped with this work with the attitude like it "Simplicity inside myself" "To be the contemporary IWAMI NETSUKE" "Consideration to the materials". I obtained many experiences from these materials, and a little but, I could feel that why the IWAMI works are IWAMI NETSUKE.
In this work, considering times were more than working times, but, I believe that I could make the IWAMI work what I could feel nothing to be ashamed to our IWAMI ancestors."
