寝子 ( Neko "Sleeping Cats" )

　これは、近藤不二賞を戴いた際の作品です。とある方による注文にて造らせて頂きました。依頼から受け渡しまで4年間もお待たせしてしまったという、とても申し訳ない仕事となってしまいました・・・生来のズボラな性格や、とても寡作であるということもあり、申しわけありませんが許して下さい・・・
　この作品を仕上げるに当って最も厄介な作業は、いかに子猫の毛並みを染め上げるかという事でした。作業を前にして、綿密に仕上がりへの段取りを予想した上で取り掛かりましたが、予想以上にしっくりと染め上げる事ができました。夜叉染めにてミルクチョコレートのように淡い茶色に染められた茶トラ猫たちは、私の苦労を微塵も知らずに、すやすやと安らかな眠りに落ちています。
　今回は、リクエストがありましたので、根付のサイズに関する私見を書き連ねてみようかと思います。私は常に根付のサイズについて模索しておりますが、結論から言いますと、通常の型彫り根付は直径3.8cm以内に納めるべきではないかと思っております。理由は単純明解です。私の中指と親指を使って輪を作ると、その直径がちょうど3.8cmとなるからです。要するに、私の掌にピッタリと合うサイズだと言う事です。なので、これが絶対的基準となる訳ではありません。根付を制作する上で、常に信じられるものは自分の触覚や身体の尺度以外の何物でもない為、自分勝手な見解ではありますが、実用を重んじる根付を常に制作して行く上で、このような結論に達しました。自らの身体に合うか合わないか、逆に申し上げると、もし根付を完全に握り込めないようでしたら、それはその方にしっくりと合う根付ではないのかも知れません・・・
　私の作品の中には、上記の内容にそぐわない長いサイズの物が見受けられると思います。それらは長いタイプの型彫り根付か、短い差し根付です。これらを区別する事は少々難しいですが、長さ、形、銘の位置などによって、判断への糸口が見つかると思います。これらの違いや私の私見に関しましては、またの機会に紹介させていただきます。

This is the work that I won the prize of Kondo Fuji. This NETSUKE was an order piece of individual person, and I kept her waiting for 4 years to make up it. So sorry to her, but, please forgive me cause I'm a sloven guy. Mankind like us, creators, are tends to be so...oops ! sorry to those of you... only me...
To finish this work, the key point was, how to dye those textures on its surface. I had an image to accomplish it before starting on it, and that image had completely suited to it as a grate hit more than I've expected. Light brown as a color of a milk chocolate, dyed out of YASYA solution, they are sleeping so peaceful　inversely to my hard stressed labor.
This time, I wanna mention about the size of normal KATABORI NETSUKE. I'm always thinking about those size of NETSUKE, and only inside my conclusion, this is the best to those, to be within the limits of 3.8cm in diameter. The reason of this opinion is so simple, that, my own hand suites to this size. When I make a loop with my thumb and middle finger, diameter of this circle should be 3.8cm. I don't think this size would be an universal measure, but, to make out something what I feel the best, only thing what I can believe is my tactile sensation or my body size. It's a bit self-opinionated comment maybe, but I'm always working on my NETSUKE with my belief that it's nothing but to be used on, so this is my conclusion that It might suites me or not. Another way of saying, if you couldn't grab your NETSUKE perfectly, that's not your size to be used on, maybe...
In my NETSUKE, you can find some exceptional works against to my opinion, the long shaped one. These are long type KATABORI NETSUKE, or short SASHI NETSUKE. Differences between two of them are quite difficult to explain, but there are obvious reasons to be categorized as so, by the length, shape, location of a signature, there are amount of clues to make it clear. Next time, I'll mention about these differences, and my opinions about it.

無題 ( titleless )

素材：鹿角　長さ：6.7cm

　本日仕上げたばかりの作品です。あまりにも疲れてしまったため、題名はまだ考えていません。とりあえずは無題ということにしておきます。この作品を造るに当たって、様々な困難に直面しましたが、今はそれを書く余力もありません。という訳で、申しわけありませんが休ませて下さい。
　さて、この作品の裏側には、ある物が彫られています。それが何だか分かりますか？もしくは、何が相応しいでしょう？

＜追記＞お待たせいたしました。答えは、蛾です。すべて夜叉染めにて仕上げています。この作品は現在、高円宮家に収蔵されております。その際に「暮秋」という題名に変更となりました。

I've finished this work today. I'm so exhausted to think about the title, so, it's unknown at now. I had to overcome many difficulties to finish this work, and, I should write about how it was so disgusting. So sorry but at now, I wanna rest.
By the way, in the back side of this work, there is something carved on. Could you guess what is it ? or, what you wanna put on to ?

携帯ストラップ「蛙」( Cellular phone strap "Frog" )

素材：象牙　長さ：2.5cm

　この作品は、7年ほど前に造られた物です。写真をご覧になれば分かるように、自身の携帯ストラップとして使用しております。私のようにヘンテコな職業の人間は、人と会う度に、どんな物を造っているのかと訊かれる事があまりにも多いので、そこでこのストラップをお見せする事となります。根付師は、作品自体がとても小さくて持ち歩きが簡単に出来てしまうので、自分の作品をその場で出して簡単に説明ができます。元来、使用される事を前提として造られるべき物ですし、他のジャンルと比べると、とても恵まれているのかもしれません。
　この作品は根付ではありませんが、間の抜けた可愛らしさに溢れていて、気に入っている物の一つです。7年間、ほぼ毎日酷使しているにもかかわらず、両目はしっかりと象眼されたまま輝いています。

I made this Frog about 7 years ago. As in the picture, I made it to be used on my cellphone. Guy like me, doing such a strange job, often required from others to show what I am doing, so, I'll show it to explain my works to them. It is so lucky thing to the NETSUKE ARTISTS, that, we can show our works so easily. Primarily, it should be made for use, and, it's such a tiny work, what we can bring it always with us inside our pocket.
This work is not as a NETSUKE, but, I love his cute and innocent face. I've treated it so harshly, about 7 years almost everyday, but, his clear eyes are still firmly inlaid, and every time, gazing at me and asking something like this "Why are you so serious? "

翼をください ( Give me Wings )

素材：象牙　高さ：3.1cm

　根付師となって1年目に文部科学大臣奨励賞を受賞した作品です。今になって観ると、根付としてはかなり甘い面も否めませんが、異様な熱っぽさを醸し出しています。今現在、この時期のあのガツガツとした情熱を以て作品を制作できるかというと、おそらく無理でしょう。とにかく、この世界で自分がどれだけの力を示せるのかと、野心むき出しで製作した記憶があります。特殊なマスキングをすることによって、煮染め後も白を残す技法を編み出したのも、この作品です。以後、この作品で培った技術や感性は、以降の作品の全ての根幹となっています。
　不思議なもので、成長することによって得られる何かがあり、失う何かもあります。この先、何を得て何を失うのか、得ることに意味があるのか、失うことをためらうべきでは無いのか、こんなことを考える事こそ無意味なのか、結局は自問自答です。ただ、過去に造った作品は、永遠にギラギラと未来の自分に向かって問いかけてくるでしょう。

1 year passed as a NETSUKE ARTIST, I won the prize of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, by this work. For now, I feel that this work is a little bit unskilled as for me, but, I can feel some strange and heat emotion on it. Now, maybe, I can not do such as work with greedy passion. I can recognize that I've done this work on a purpose that how I can show off my skill into the NETSUKE world. By this work, I could invent a new method how to dye NETSUKE by using some special liquids. All of my techniques what I obtained by making this NETSUKE, are still now the basis of my works.
It is mysterious that, we can gain something when we are growing up, but at the same time, there are something what we should lose. From this time on, what would I gain and what should I loose ? Are there some meanings why I should gain something ? Wouldn't I hesitate about what should I loose ? Thinking about something like this should be so ridiculous ? Finally it's just only a monologue. But, works that I've made at the past time, would shine enough and will ask me something forever.

蟷螂 ( Mantis )

素材：鹿角　長さ：7.9cm

　鹿角という素材は、根付を制作するうえで最も難しいものの一つと言えるでしょう。組織が詰まっている部分は、根元のクラウンと言われる部分ぐらいで、あとは太い部位も先端の細い部位も、中身の半分ほどがスと呼ばれるスポンジ状の脆い組織で構成されています。根付師はまず、限定された素材の形から図を起こし、その際にこのスをどう生かすか殺すかを考えます。堅木や象牙などにはあり得ないほどの縛りの多さから、根付師の多くはこの素材を使いたがらない傾向にあるでしょう。しかし、この特性を巧みに制御あるいは応用して納得のいく作品を彫り当てた時の充実感は、他に代え難い物があります。その為、一度でもこの材料と徹底的に対話してしまった作家は、今度は逆に鹿角から離れられなくなってしまうという一面もあります。そんな私も、この厄介極まりない材料の虜となりつつあります。
　鹿角には、何だか宗教のような匂いが漂っています。苦しい修行のような場面、喜びや悲しみが数秒ごとに現れたり消えたりする感覚、最後の染めで全てが台無しになり、ひと月もの時間を無駄にしてしまう残酷さ、染めてみると、思わぬ味が出て想像を遥かに超える傑作となる喜び、作業の過程のほとんど全てが、必要以上のスリルに満ち溢れたチキンレースです。最後の審判は、人間の力などまったく及ばない所で決定してしまいます。何かを創造するという行為が対話であるとするならば、これほど口が悪く頑固で油断のならない相手はなかなか居ません。しかし、そういう相手に譲歩しつつ仲裁を試みて、ある一つの結論を導き出すという作業は、我々のように孤独な偏屈者にはうってつけなのかもしれません。物造りという所業の究極のかたちでしょうか。

Material: Stag Length: 7.9cm

I can say that the Stag is one of the most difficult material to deal with. The part that can easily carve is only at the base of it, where we usually call them "Crown". Other part whether thick or thin, more than half percent of there inside are consisted by the fragile structure what we call them "Pore". First of all, NETSUKE ARTISTS must image how to make up NETSUKE despite this materials complicated and limited shape, and, must to consider about how to use this pore or how to abandon it. Many of NETUKE ARTISTS do not want to deal with this material because of its difficulties to carve, and, its can not be compared to do so by dealing Ivories or woods. But, the pleasure that you feel when you could dominate or control it, it is more than ever. So, when NETSUKE ARTISTS once thoroughly experienced this material, now, possibly he would be addicted to it. For me, maybe I'm also.
Dealing with Stag is something like a "ZEN". Like an ascetic practice. Pleasure and despair are on the two sides of the same coin. When finishing the work, suddenly, the tragedy would become. For example, badly dyed will spoil my work in an instant which I spent during one month . Otherwise, well dyed more than I've ever expected. Almost whole process of the work is almost like a game of chicken. At last, someone else maybe like a God would determine everything. Human can't do anything. If the meaning of the word "creation" would be something like conversation, Stag is so sarcastic and cunning opponent as well. But, dealing with such as obstinate object, is maybe the most suitable to the lonely and narrow-minded existence someone like us. Maybe, it's one of the sort of ultimate creation as it ought to be.

蜥蜴 ( Lizard )

素材：象牙　巾：3.8cm

　この作品は、高円宮久子妃殿下より「高円宮賞」を戴いた際の根付です。画像では分かりにくいかもしれませんが、茸の上にカナヘビが乗っている構図となっております。根付をプロとして彫り始めてから3年目にしての受賞でした。根付の世界では最高の栄誉となる賞であり、史上最年少にての受賞でした。正直、受賞の連絡が来た際には、申し訳ないような複雑な気分だったことを思い出します。素直に喜びを感じられるようになったのは、それから数日後のことです。

This is the work that I won the prize of His Highness PRINCE TAKAMADO. It is not obvious by this picture maybe, but, a Lizard is hanging on a Mushroom. I won this prize 3 years after when I become professional NETSUKE ARTIST. This prize is the most honorable one in this NETSUKE world, and, I was the youngest person who won it. To tell the truth, I felt so embarrassed when I've got a telephone call that I've won the prize. And it took few days that I really could feel happy.
